Introduction:

I am Gayathri Varadarajan with over two decades of experience in data and database technologies. I have had an opportunity to work with diverse database platforms including PostgreSQL and served as an SME in Snowflake. I am also an active participant in the Chennai Postgres meetup community.

Journey in PostgreSQL:

My journey with PostgreSQL began in 2018, when a leading BFSI client decided to adopt open-source technologies. PostgreSQL was the chosen database, and my first challenge was to re-engineer and migrate their data mart from MS SQL Server. That project marked my entry into this powerful ecosystem.

Can you share a pivotal moment or project in your PostgreSQL career that has been particularly meaningful to you:

Every project is unique in its own way with interesting learnings and challenges. @Pravartak, where I contributed to projects of national importance, holds a special place in my career.

Contributions and Achievements:

Leading the engineering aspects of PostgreSQL implementations—translating critical customer requirements into reliable solutions—has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey

Have you faced any challenges in your work with PostgreSQL, and how did you overcome them:

PostgreSQL, like any robust technology, has its learning curves. When you have a great team beside you, every challenge can be overcome with flying colours. Community documentation and real-time discussions have often helped us overcome blockers.

Community Involvement:

Participating and coordinating in community events like PWI, PostgresConf, and planning and assisting in organizing PostgreSQL Chennai meetup events.

Can you share your experience with mentoring or supporting other women in the PostgreSQL ecosystem:

While mentoring in the PostgreSQL ecosystem has never been limited by gender, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor several women at different stages of their careers—from fresh engineers exploring databases to professionals transitioning into leadership roles. This has included technical coaching on database concepts, architecture, internals, guiding first-time speakers for community events, and offering support in navigating career decisions.

Insights and Advice:

Be strong on foundation. Knowing the internals and the intricacies will help in the long run. See the big picture and pay attention to the finer details—that’s where great engineering happens.

Are there any resources (books, courses, forums) you’d recommend to someone looking to deepen their PostgreSQL knowledge:

While there are many documents out there, PostgreSQL official documentation and Internals by Hironobu Suzuki is a good start.

Looking Forward:

I am particularly excited about the security and optimizer enhancements, apart from the streamlined adoption of vector, AI, graph, and geospatial tools.

Do you have any upcoming projects or goals within the PostgreSQL community that you can share?

With the support of our Pravartak leadership team—including Dr. MJ Shankar Raman, Mr. Vasan, Mr. Veeraraghavan—and guidance from the Director of IIT Madras, along with Balaji Krishnarajan and others, we’re working to strengthen the PostgreSQL community in Chennai—fostering better career pathways and collaboration.

Personal Reflection:

It’s exciting to be part of an extremely supportive community which is truly global and diverse, where deep technical excellence flourishes.

How do you balance your professional and personal life, especially in a field that is constantly evolving?

It’s all about prioritization. Clearly aligning goals on both personal and professional fronts, and being transparent with your stakeholders—whether at work or at home—helps in striking the right balance, even in a fast-evolving tech space.

Message to the Community:

You belong here. PostgreSQL is not just a powerful technology—it’s a community built on openness, learning, and mutual support. As someone who transitioned into open-source after years in tech, I can assure you: your questions, your voice, your curiosity—they all matter. Never let the depth of the domain intimidate you. Dive in. Learn. Share. And when you’ve found your footing, reach back and help the next woman up.

Let’s rise by lifting each other—and let’s stay insightful, inspiring, and inclusive.
